So, this national event actually took place yesterday but since I had all of my children "at work" with me, I didn't have an opportunity to write a blog post about it!
One of my triplets wanted to go to school as he was a slated speaker in his bid for a Student Council seat, one of them wanted to go with my husband, but his workplace does not recognize the "Take Your Child To Work" Day holiday, and one of them started looking/acting feverish the night before, so I decided they should just all stay home (save the aspiring politician) with me and see what Mommy's "work" looks like.
My day typically starts with getting them ready for school, helping them get lunches together and piecing together school uniforms if I'm behind on laundry and they don't have enough clean clothes. Oops. Since I only had to uniform one bod, I was able to get one of my friends from the neighborhood to pick the overachiever up and the rest of us slackers (well, I guess I was the only one) slept in. Now, understand that "sleeping in" in this household is 7 a.m., so it's not like I lounged in bed for half the day, although I attempted to that later.
The reason no one gets to sleep much past 7 a.m. here is because the first order of "business" was the multiple requests that I make Mickey Mouse pancakes, which I did only because my eldest daughter took the initiative to get the waffle maker down and make the batter. I figured with 4 cups of batter already prepared, I was on the hook, so proceeded to prepare Mickey, Daisy, Donald and the crew.
After I get my coffee and Vi shake for breakfast and take everyone to school and return home, usually the next order of business is to put the Little Man down for a nap so I can get some "real work" done. While preparing and serving breakfast either to him or, in yesterday's case, the whole crew, I typically unload and reload the dishwasher, clean out the sink (yes, Fly Lady!) and fold and switch over a load of laundry. By the time breakfast is done and cleaned up, I've usually done one additional laundry load. Two per day around here juuuust keeps us caught up . . .
Once he goes down for a nap I try to squeeze in as many phone calls, blog posts or email follow ups as I can while it's relatively quiet. This is also when I check into the back offices of my various businesses and check on commissions, check the bank account, pay any bills due that day and otherwise deal with finances and business.
Depending on if I have supervision for him and how long I'm scheduled to go, I sometimes get my run in during this time, otherwise my run happens when Jeff gets home from work, and then my lifting or gym workout later on in the evening, depending on whether I teach class that day or not.
JD gets up, I make us both some lunch and I try then to do business on social media that doesn't take as much of my attention before it's time to pick the rest of the hooligans up from school. After school is homework, prepare for dinner, either teach class at the gym or train anywhere from one to three clients in the evening hours and then possibly hold another group workout at home after everyone has bathed/showered and bedded down for the night.
This is typically the point in the evening when I turn back to emails/blogs/social media or follow up calls or messages I need to deal with and I "work" another hour before taking my "me" time for the day, typically between 9 and 9:30. Jeff and I have tried to get to sleep at 10 p.m. of late to try to get better quality sleep but I usually don't quite make it to bed until 11:00.
Last night I extended my "work night" with a friend who came by to pick up some wine she had ordered -- and then of course we had to sample a little and naturally that led to a few hours of socializing. Perfect ending to a rich, full day of work and managing the children and home, to be able to enjoy the company and fellowship of a good friend over some sumptuous snacks and a beautiful glass of vino!
So, I'm not sure that my children really felt like they were at "work" with me yesterday, although we did go meet Daddy for lunch and see his workplace, then made a grocery and bank run in between the other activities I've outlined above. I have to say though, "showing" my children my "work" day illuminated for me how lucky I am to have the career that I do with Visalus, Beachbody, personal training and group fitness because my "work" day really doesn't feel much like work at all! I feel very blessed to be writing this blog with my 2-year-old on my lap eating homemade hummus and carrots, raising healthy children who see their parents leading an active and fulfilling, financially rewarding lifestyle as solopreneurs, learning alongside us how to manage a household, raise children, and operate a business while trying to achieve balance in all areas. Bottom line is, I wouldn't trade my job for the world!
If this sounds like the lifestyle YOU would love to be leading, I am always looking for driven, focused, self-motivating, health & fitness-conscious people who want to partner with us in our successful business. I'd love to help you retire from your 9-5 J.O.B. (Just Over Broke), earn free cars, trips, wine or just get healthy and stay fit for life. Contact me and let's talk about how to make this happen for you!
